Mt. Rushmore at Dawn

Dawn at Mt. Rushmore

Dawn at Mt. Rushmore

I got up at about 4:30 to get this shot because I read that the light at dawn would be fantastic.  Well, unfortunately it was very cloudy, and all I got was the blue light of early dawn.  This was shot with my Nikon D200 just before 6:00 a.m., and it was COLD out there!  Makes a nice counterpoint to my evening Mt. Rushmore posted earlier. (f 4.5, shutter speed 1/20)

Evening at Mt. Rushmore

Evening at Mt. Rushmore

This photo was taken at the special evening program which was lovely–very patriotic and educational, as well.  It focused on the accomplishments of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, (Teddy) Roosevelt, and Lincoln.  I used my Canon EOS Rebel XT for this shot, though I also shot it with my Nikon D200 and my Panasonic Lumix TZ5.  (f 4.0, ISO 1600)

Arches National Park's Double Arch in Utah

Arches National Park

This gorgeous double arch at Utah’s Arches National Park was merely a 10-minute hike over medium terrain.  As you can likely tell, I used my circular polarizer to cut glare and haze and to bring out the blue in the sky.
I probably took about 75-100 photos of this double arch, most of them without tourists showing.  I posted this one, however, because I think that the people included (particularly the young lady with arms extended in the lower arch) help to give it a sense of scale.
I don’t mind admitting that it was a bit of a challenge when I decided that I had to experience the feeling of getting way up there inside that arch.  It was quite a climb over solid rock, but I did experience a feeling of triumph, mixed in with trepidation.
When people ask me what was most surprising about my cross-country trip, I often start with mentioning the sheer beauty of those three Utah national parks:  Arches, Bryce Canyon, and Zion national parks.  Stay tuned for some photos from the latter.

Arizona's Vermillion Cliffs--Part of my In Search of America Cross-Country Trip

Arizona's Vermillion Cliffs

This is one of nearly 9000 photos I took on my 27 day whirlwind cross-country trip–one which I call “In Search of America.”   I had to  pull way off the highway and shoot quickly with my Nikon D200 at 20 mm (f10.0)  to get this.  Despite the sun and blue skies, I used a cloudy white balance to bring out the reds.  It is one of many scenes that made me open my mouth in awe and wonder.
