Moonrise at Arches

Moonrise at Arches

I arrived at Utah’s Arches National Park later than I planned on September 14 this past year.  Still, I was fortunate to get a lovely moonrise and some gorgeous colors (deepened a bit on Picassa).  I hope to show some daytime shots of Arches, Bryce, and Zion soon.  Utah was fantastic.  I had no idea!

The Beautiful Side of the Great Ice Storm of 2008

The Beautiful Side of the Great Ice Storm of 2008

Happy Holidays to you all!  After a few days without power, I went searching for scenes that showed the beautiful side of the ice storm.  I want to post a couple here, and a few more on my flicker site http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrgrosky.  This one was captured with my Panasonic Lumix TZ5 at an ISO of 100, an aperture of 3.4, and a shutter speed of 1/800.  The power blackout plus a couple of weeks preparing for my first ever two craft fairs pulled me away from my photo blog, but I’m back now.  Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and best wishes to all those who celebrate other winter holidays like Ramadan, Kwanza, Dwali, St. Lucia’s Day, Los Posadas, and Chinese New Year.  May the New Year bring peace, health, wisdom, and joy to you all and to all nations of the world.

In Remembrance of Those Who Gave Their Lives

In Remembrance of Those Who Gave Their Lives

These men gathered, in authentic Civil War Union attire, at the new Gettysburg Memorial Visitor’s Center in Pennsylvania.  They demonstrated military formations and mock-firing of weapons.  Gettysburg was amazing—the brand-new museum (visitor’s center) as well as the battlefield tour, which I did with the aid of an audio CD and a map.  I posted this in honor of all of our veterans and all those who died so that our country and freedom might live.  Thanks to Nick Boren  http://www.flickr.com/photos/cougars/  for inspiring me to post my photos on this theme, by viewing his extraordinary images on his photoblog.

In Remembrance of Those Who Gave Their Lives

In Remembrance of Those Who Gave Their Lives

I like the juxtaposition here of the cannon and the cemetery—cause and effect.  This is the cemetery in which Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address:  “…that these dead shall not have died in vain, and that Government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from this earth.”

mt-rushmore-mountain-goat

I had no idea that Mt. Rushmore was also famous for its mountain goats!  (Panasonic Lumix f 4.6)  I had a great time there, seeing the Presidential monument both in the evening and first thing in the morning.  Will post one of those shots next.

Sorry I haven’t posted since Friday, but was on a father/son mini-vacation up in the White Mountains from Saturday through Monday.  Will try to post 1 or 2 photos from there over the next few days.
